Prepare your business for snow and ice this winter
It is important to predict weather patterns globally and within the UK, but it is worth reviewing global weather conditions to give us an idea about what to expect this winter, and how you should prepare your business for winter gritting maintenance and heavy snowfall. Many weather forecasters look to El Niño as a barometer of what to expect.
Why does El Niño affect winter snow fall?
The El Niño phenomena can trigger intense weather patterns across the globe and this can mean colder than average winters in northern Europe, including the UK. At the moment it looks possible that this will happen again this winter as it did in 2018 when the UK suffered heavy snowfall as a result of the ‘Beast from the East.’
What is El Niño?
Niño means water temperatures are warmer than average. It was originally recognised by fisherman off the coast of South America in the 1600s when warm water was discovered in the Pacific Ocean. The name was chosen as it meant ‘Christ child’ and the event happened at Christmas time.
According to research by the ENSO diagnostics discussion who update predictions on El Niño monthly, El Niño is present. Equatorial sea surface temperatures are currently above the average across most of the Pacific Ocean and the pattern of winds are consistent with it. Data in July 2019 predicts a 66% chance of El Niño continuing through summer 2019. With a 50% to 55% chance of carrying on into autumn and winter 2019.
