Spring is here, but it was only a few weeks ago that we were gritting regularly and watching snow fall in the South East. The 2022/23 gritting season has been one of the most prolonged gritting seasons with a week of snow in early December and the recent March bad weather.

Clearway Gritting teams undertook 30% more site visits in 2022/23
So far during the 2022/23 gritting season Clearway Gritting teams based in St Albans, Aylesbury, High Wycombe, Harlow, Huntingdon and Milton Keynes have made over 25,000 site visits. This is approximately 30% more site visits than during the 2021/22 winter gritting season.
Climate change is making it very difficult to predict the weather patterns we experience and this gritting season we have had a substantial amount of snow. Despite the view that temperatures are increasing because of global warming we have found night time temperatures to be particularly low this winter, and our gritting teams have been out on many winter evenings gritting company car parks, supermarket car parks, hospital car parks, access roads, pavements and private roads, so our clients can access their company premises safely every day.
Prof Nigel Arnell, Professor of Climate System Science at the University of Reading, said:
“We will still get cold weather events in the future even as climate warms – they may become less frequent, but they will still cause disruption when they occur. The challenge is to make sure we remain prepared even as events become less frequent – a reduction in frequency potentially makes them more disruptive when they happen. Climate change disrupts circulation patterns, so there is the potential for some types of extreme cold events (“beast from the east”) to become more frequent – although this is speculative. The key point is that higher average temperatures don’t mean that cold events are no longer an issue.”

However, we also offer ad hoc contracts, so we come and grit your business premises when you require it.
