Scientists expect Britain to face coldest winter in 30 years
Scientists from UCL believe Britain could face its coldest winter in more than 30 years, according to an advanced forecast which would see temperatures falling to well below freezing and a return to the ‘Beast from the East’ type conditions. Scientists are predicting that January to February 2020 could see the seventh coldest winter conditions in the past 30 years as they expect freezing Arctic air to hit the UK in the New Year. The forecast was compiled by a team of researchers from UCL, led by professor Mark Saunders. The four-month prediction resulted from analysis of the impact of sunlight and pressures on the jet stream
Andrew Sherriff, Director, Clearway Gritting, St Albans, Hertfordshire said:
‘The forecast compiled from UCL is just one of many that we review. Given the current variability in global weather patterns it is difficult to accurately predict what type of weather we will experience this winter. In July we experienced Britain’s hottest temperature on record at 38.7C in Cambridge University Botanic Garden, so it is possible that we could experience an extreme winter too. We subscribe to both the Met Office and MetDesk weather services and follow their predictions, so we know when to expect bad weather. We make sure our winter gritting teams are prepared to go out to our customers so their business can remain open by removing snow and grit and salt their pathways, carparks, footpaths and private roads. We ensure that whether your business is an office, retail park, industrial unit, university, supermarket or hospital your colleagues and customers can park safely in bad weather.’
Peter Boniface, Operations Manager, Clearway Gritting, St Albans, Hertfordshire said:
